As mentioned in my previous blog I visited my father last week. He supplements his pension by witching wells. In case you don’t know what a well witcher does, he or she finds running water underneath the earth’s surface. In my dad’s case he uses a willow, two pieces approximately 16” to 20” taped together to form a V. He then tromps through the bush, across fields, over meadows, etc. looking for a stream of water. When you find water, the willow twists in your hand and points down. Apparently wire can also be used, but my Dad prefers willow. When you hit a stream of water the willow pulls so strongly you cannot hold it upright…well, that is if you have the gift. I took my Dad’s willow and walked in his exact foot steps, not even a quiver…however, as soon as he touched my hand, the willow spun in my hands. I decided it must be the tool; obviously I was a ‘wire’ witcher. However, a coat hanger died in vain, as it soon became apparent that the tool was not the problem.
I am sceptical about a lot...
